Life & work
Making music together
Salmak Khaledi, a 127 trombonist, said the group had no fixed instrument plan: its long friendships shaped the instruments in the band.24 Khaledi also described songwriting as a group effort.4
Yahya Alkhansa remembered Sohrab asking him to play a tombak rhythm on the drum kit. Sohrab sang while Sardar Sarmast added piano, and the song came together in that moment.5 Yahya said they had not decided in advance to start working in Persian; he said the lyrics’ content did not change with the language.5
The official album caption names Sardar Sarmast for backing vocals on “Man Kiam” and “Khosro-e Khooban”3, Shervin Shahamipour for backing vocals on “Mellat-e Sarfaraz” and “Charand Goft”3, and Negar Arkani and Mina Khojasteh for choir on “Hamash Dood Bood” and “Mellat-e Sarfaraz”3.
From Dubai to the reunion
In March 2008, 127 played at XVA in Dubai at the start of a US tour. The band performed without drummer Yahya Alkhansa, a conscript who could not leave Iran under his service conditions.2
Songlines later reported that 127 reunited at Rich Mix in Shoreditch in January 2025, their first show together in 17 years.6

Founded in 2001 by a group of visionary artists in Tehran, 127 is an independent band that has played a pivotal role in Iran's progressive cultural landscape.
For the first time in years, the original lineup—Sohrab Mohebbi (vocals and guitar), Salmak Khaledi (trombone), Sardar Sarmast (piano), and Yahya Alkhansa (drums)—will reunite on stage to deliver an unforgettable performance.
