Hichkas is the stage name of Iranian rapper Soroush Lashkari, born in Tehran in 1985. BBC Culture described his early socially critical work as offering a view of life in Iran.1 Writing in Index on Censorship, Mari Shibata described his Persian lyrics as bringing devices from traditional Iranian poetry into conversational street speech.2 She also described how he turned Tehran’s telephone code, 021, into song and a sign language that became a symbol of Iranian hip-hop and its followers.2

Life & work
From Jangale Asphalt to Mojaz
Hichkas has recalled making physical copies of his first album, Jangale Asphalt, in 2006 and being arrested while selling them on the streets of Tehran. In a later recollection he described the excitement and anxiety of secretly hand-delivering the first copies.23 The original release year remains disputed: his official YouTube channel says 2005, while Spotify lists an 11-song edition in 2006. The catalogue date and track count do not establish the original issue or its programme.45
In 2014, he shared extracts from an unfinished song for Mojaz. Shibata described him working alongside longtime producer Mahdyar Aghajani on the forthcoming album and described its ambition as preserving Iranian roots while seeking a more complex sound and a place in the worldwide hip-hop scene.2 Hichkas wrote in March 2018 that recording was finished; preorders began in March 2020, and the album appeared that year with 16 tracks. For “Rosva”, one of its songs, his own track card credits the words to Hichkas and the music to Mahdyar.6789
Songs and collaborations
BBC Culture places Ye Rooze Khoob Miad (A Good Day Will Come) in 2010, soon after the Green Movement protests. BBC Culture reports that the tensions following those protests forced him into exile in London, and that the song was his last recording made inside Iran.11011 It describes Dastasho Mosht Karde (They’ve Clenched Their Fists) as a response to the 2019 protests: its cover bore names of people killed in the crackdown. Hichkas credited Mahdyar with the song’s music.11213
Later releases carry different credits. Hichkas wrote, composed and produced Ma Edame Darim, while Urf composed Tigham Rooye Raget. On Har Ye Rooz, Hichkas and Poobon shared the lyrics and Poobon composed the music.14151617
