Life & work
From Tehran to San Francisco
The band’s biography dates its formation to 2003, while its homepage and YouTube description give 2004.523 Its musicians emigrated to the United States and Canada after censorship and restrictions in Iran.7 Ordinary Man (Adam e Mamooli) was released in 2005.5
Kiosk performed at San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts and Yoshi’s Jazz Club.5 The Yoshi’s recording became Triple Distilled: Live at Yoshi’s, released in 2010.75 Alongside its albums, Kiosk released Ay Yarom Bia in 2008 and Morgh e Sahar (Bird of Dawn) in 2009, both featuring Mohsen Namjoo.5 Its Strange Days, released in 2014, is a JJ Cale cover.5
An album as a chapter of life
Sobhani’s work in Kiosk includes songwriting and lyrics, as well as guitar and vocals.7 In a 2016 interview, he explained why the album remained an important form for him: a period or chapter of life could have a beginning and an end within it. He compared making an album to writing a novel rather than a blog, preserving the feeling of a period rather than a single moment.8
That interview accompanied Stereo Tull Presents, released in 2016.5 Sobhani recalled Stereo Tull as an organization that circulated unauthorized music in Iran during the 1360s and 1370s of the Solar Hijri calendar. Before the internet and satellite television, with shortwave radio also less available, it brought music from around the world into Iran, copied it onto cassettes and passed it to listeners.8 He described the album as the story of Kamran Mellat, who led that network.8
Sweet Destiny, titled پایان شیرین in Persian, grew from Sobhani’s long-held wish to make a musical film.9 In August 2021, he said the band had spent about four years working on the album with limited resources.9 During that period, they had gone without releasing an album while concentrating on the project.9 Sweet Destiny was released in 2021; Desolateville followed in 2023.5

Kiosk is a pioneering Iranian rock band (The Berlin Daily Newspaper) founded by Arash Sobhani in Tehran in 2003. After censorship and restriction by Iranian authorities, its musicians immigrated to the U.S. and Canada. The band has since toured throughout the world and released 10 albums. Kiosk is known for its satirical lyrics, which provide a socio-political commentary of life in Iran, as well as its blend of several music styles, from Iranian folk to gypsy jazz to rock. Kiosk's music has been described by BBC World as "songs that speak to a generation...Kiosk's stinging political satire is hidden within its blues and folksy sound." Haaretz has referred to Kiosk as the most popular Iranian rock band in the Iranian diaspora, while Ahram Online describes how the band gives a voice to their generation. Kiosk's live album "Triple Distilled," recorded at Yoshi's Jazz Club, was chosen by presenter Mark Coles from BBC World's "World of Music" as one of the ten best world music albums of the year, alongside such artists as Paolo Conte and Ali Farka Touré. TIME Magazine has called Kiosk "a band that can criticize the Iranian government without retribution," while Frontline PBS has praised their "eclectic sound that incorporates a multitude of instruments and styles." Current Kiosk members include Ali Kamali (bass, recording engineer), Arash Sobhani (lyricist and songwriter, guitar, vocals) and Shahrouz Molaei (drum).
