Life & work
From piano and radif to a band in Perth
Tiba studied classical piano before turning to Persian singing. In a Persian-language interview, she recalled six years of piano study and seven years learning the vocal radif with Hengameh Akhavan. Improvisation was central to her interest in jazz: she wanted to develop her ability to improvise within Persian music.4
She moved to Perth in 2012, seeking opportunities to perform in public. The following year, while studying jazz at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, she formed her own band and first performed on stage.1
A Persian Dream
Her debut album, A Persian Dream, was released on 16 May 2014. In the interview, Tiba described its concept as moving between distant musical places as freely as in a dream, while retaining a sense of unity. She also explained that the musicians were recording together in the studio, so one member’s absence had delayed production.24
The 2014 single Fly Me To The Moon( Ba Man Bia Be Assemoon) offers another meeting of Persian words and jazz repertoire. Tiba wrote its Persian lyrics to Bart Howard’s music; her official upload credits the performance to the Tara Tiba Quintet.56
Omid and the Iranian–Cuban collaboration
On her second album, Omid (2019), Tiba worked with Cuban pianist and composer Ivan Melon Lewis as producer and an ensemble of Iranian and Cuban musicians. The recording combines original songs with versions of songs including Ain’t No Sunshine, extending the cross-cultural repertoire of her earlier work.178
