Ebrahim Monsefi (ابراهیم منصفی) was a poet, singer and writer from Hormozgan, born in Bandar Abbas in 1324 of the Solar Hijri calendar. He adopted the name Rami as a young poet.23 His voice and guitar can be heard on Râmi's Songs, whose booklet credits him with both.4

Life & work

Poetry, guitar and cinema

Monsefi's free verse began appearing in the magazines خوشه and فردوسی in 1347. His writing also extended to cinema: he wrote نهنگ and acted in three short films directed by حسن بنی‌هاشمی within the Free Cinema movement.2

His musical interests included Spanish flamenco and Indian music.2 The Rami archive's biography describes his performances with guitar chords as simple and unadorned.2

Recordings and their circulation

Monsefi died on 1 Tir 1376.2 The synopsis of Chicheka Lullaby describes him recording more than 200 songs with a small cassette player.5 The sixteen-song Râmi's Songs offers one collection of his performances. Its entry in the Rami archive dates the edition published by ماه ریز مهر to 1385, while the booklet carries a 2004 copyright for Mahriz Recordings.64 The platform dates differ too: January 1, 2004 on Apple Music and 2009 on Spotify.78

Monsefi's life and music meet again in the documentary Chicheka Lullaby, titled چی‌چکا قصه‌ی شب in Persian: he is its subject and is also credited for its music.5 In the director's statement, the filmmaker describes collecting, digitizing and archiving Hormozgan's scattered musical and literary heritage, including videos, cassettes, photographs, handwritten notes and poems. This places the film within a wider effort to preserve the region's cultural material.5

His songs have also become material for later musicians. On 1 Tir 1402, Juma released نایه آفتو (آفتاب نمی‌آید), a Gilaki performance using a poem by رمضان پورطاهر. Its music is based on Monsefi's «آدمِ پوچ» and dedicated to his memory.9
